Planning your project

From the first idea to the finished details.

What should we consider before building a custom home?

Start with the location, how you want to live, your construction investment goals, and anticipated timing. Share any plans or reference images you have. Completed drawings are not required for an initial conversation.

What are the steps in building a new custom home?

Begin with a conversation about the property and project. Planning then brings together scope, design, budgeting, materials, and scheduling before construction. The finished work is reviewed together at a walkthrough.

Can you work with our architect or designer?

Yes. Russ coordinates with the client and design team. Let us know who is involved and how far the design has progressed so that responsibilities and the next steps can be discussed.

How do we know whether our project fits our budget?

Share your investment goals and the scope you are considering. The site, existing conditions, drawings, and material choices help shape early budgeting. A project-specific discussion is more useful than a general price per square foot.

How long will it take, and what size projects do you consider?

Scope, design readiness, site conditions, selections, and the construction schedule all matter. Tell us what you hope to build or remodel and your preferred timing; discuss the fit and availability directly with Russ.

What if we want to make a change during construction?

Bring the idea to Russ and the project team. Review the options and any effects on scope, cost, and timing, then agree on a documented plan before proceeding with the change.

Where do you build?

Our work includes custom homes and substantial remodels throughout Southern Maine, including Cape Elizabeth, Scarborough, Falmouth, and Cumberland. Share your town or property address when you get in touch.

Do you build custom furniture and millwork?

Yes. In addition to our homes, the work includes custom furniture, cabinetry, built-ins, and architectural woodwork. Discuss the piece, its setting, materials, and intended use with Russ; our millwork galleries show examples of finished work.

How are finishing details and follow-up handled?

Review the completed work with Russ at the walkthrough and discuss any remaining items. Ask about the follow-up arrangements and warranty terms for your particular project as part of your agreement.

Do you have a particular building style?

The portfolio includes traditional and contemporary homes. Bring the features, room uses, and references that matter to you so the conversation can start with the way you want to live.

Can we speak with past clients?

Ask Russ for references from completed projects. Any visit to a past client’s home needs to be arranged with that homeowner’s permission.

How long have you been building in Maine?

Russ Doucette has been building and renovating homes since 1980 and personally leads the work.
